An elderly couple have been left without their phone service for nearly a month after vandals attacked cables.
Terence Spink, 74, and his wife Molly, 66, say they have not had a working telephone since yobs burnt the phone cables near their home in Halton Moor, in Leeds, earlier this month.
The YEP understands this is the seventh time that engineers have been called out to replace the cables in the area.
Mr Spink, of Kendal Drive, said that the latest attack happened on Friday, May 4, at around 2am.
He said: “We found out what had happened when I tried to phone my daughter and got no service.
“I can’t even make an emergency phone call because I don’t have a mobile phone.
“The nearest phone box is nearly three-quarters of a mile away. I’m 74 and it is something I could do without.”
The YEP understands the service was restored on May 15 but arsonsists returned through the night and set the cables alight again.
Mr Spink added: “The phones have been on for half-a-day since they went off but we have had nothing since then.
“It’s just not good enough.I haven’t even had any correspondence for the telephone people to say that they are sorry.”
A Virgin Media spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of an act of vandalism in the Kendal Drive area yesterday which has damaged some of our cable equipment. Our engineers are on site and we’re getting our customers back online. We take vandalism seriously and will work with the police to identify those responsible.”
A BT spokeswoman added: “The BT network in this area has been subject to several arson attacks in recent months causing severe disruption to phone service for the local community, some of who rely on their phone as a lifeline. We have worked as quickly as possible to restore service on each occasion but the damage caused each time is extensive and takes time to repair.”
“We would urge anyone who sees any suspicious activity near our network in this area to contact the police.”
